Inside Job
Rotund World
By Joel Weinstein
After going over the previous episode of Rotund World with a fine-tooth comb, our crew of burly, no-nonsense after-the- fact-checkers informed us there were things we neglected to say.
For one thing, we forgot to mention the Rineke Dijkstra exhibition of large-scale photographs that just ended at Marian Goodman gallery on West 57th, a more than usually sunny gathering of gawky adolescents in woodsy settings. We also left out our visit to the Morgan Library and Museum where we greatly enjoyed an exhibition of Saul Steinberg’s illustrations and constructions. We don’t think it’s possible to tire of Steinberg’s trenchant, funny take on the twentieth century’s baroque grandeur. At times we see the world as a colorful Steinberg burlesque, all big hips, black jackboots, legions of alligators, and block letters reclining on a chaise like a beckoning lover. If you read this before March 4th and you’re in Manhattan, go immediately to the museum. Tell them Rotund World sent you, for all the good it will do.
Our biggest lapse, say our accuracy goons, was to fail to direct our readers to the MOMA web site where they could see the works of Richter, Weems, Reverón, et al, in a considerably better form than we could ever provide. We beg forgiveness and direct your attention to the exhibitions section of said site.
We’ve expanded our links list ever so slightly to include a San Juan-based internet magazine whose focus is the visual arts. Trance Líquido is an omnibus listing of area art doings, created by the courageous design team Lilliam Nieves and Arnaldo Román. They’ve been kind to Rotund World, and we hope you’ll visit their site on a regular basis.
